Lead Pastor Job Description

OVERVIEW

The Lead Pastor of Trinity Park Church should be an individual who has felt the call of God on their family and ministry to serve and lead Trinity Park Church into the future with conviction, vision, prayer, and humility.  The pastor should be an engaging, prayer-focused, and biblically faithful teacher with the ability to relate to people of different ethnic, socio-economic and generational backgrounds.  This pastor should have the desire and willingness to lead our church as we seek to execute the mission of the church to make, mature, and mobilize disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

 

RESPONSIBLILITIES

  • Serve as the spiritual leader of Trinity Park Church.
  • Provide overall vision and strategic planning for the current, short-term, and long-term future direction of ministries that will ensure continued and growing ministry effectiveness of the church.
  • Serve as the primary preacher and biblical teacher responsible for the emphasis, themes, and direction of our worship services, especially related to the message or sermon portion of the service.  This would include delivering effective, biblically based and Christ-centered sermons that not only impart spiritual truths to God’s people, but that calls all people to life-transforming spiritual change through the working of the Holy Spirit.  In addition, responsibilities would include approving and coordinating guest speakers and other pastoral staff members who would on occasion be called upon to preach and teach.
  • Responsible for all church staff by creating an environment that encourages a team approach to ministry by the staff.  This would include giving staff the ability to succeed and maximize the effectiveness of their areas of ministry with the support of the church council.  Responsibility for the recruitment and recommendation of hiring of staff and, when necessary, termination recommendations to the church council, establishing job descriptions and ministry responsibilities; create an environment of healthy and proper relationships among the staff; and ensure the discipleship, training, and development of all staff.  Conduct regular and consistent meetings with pastoral staff members together on a regular basis.  Conduct at least annual evaluations with each staff member individually.  Meet with other church leaders as necessary and needed to ensure the vision and effectiveness of church ministries and departments.
  • Serve as the ex-officio member of the Church Council, church committees and teams.  This should include attending regularly scheduled (usually bi-monthly) church council meetings where in addition to church business, it will be the responsibility of the Lead Pastor to see to it that reporting is provided to the Church Council on the spiritual, organizational, and financial health of the church and congregation.  In addition, the Lead Pastor will develop vision and future planning sessions as needed with the Church Council and staff to ensure the continued direction and effectiveness of God-centered ministries of the church.
  • Spend an appropriate amount of time in prayer and study in preparation for preaching, leadership, and ministry responsibilities.
  • Serve as a leader by example in personal discipleship, stewardship, evangelism, and a Christ-centered life.
  • Either conduct, approve, and/or oversee weddings, funerals, infant dedications, baptisms, and church membership according to the doctrinal and policy commitments of the church as needed and necessary.
  • Officiate or oversee the sacraments of Holy Communion on a regular basis and Baptisms as requested.
  • When needed, counsel congregants and families on how to live biblically faithful lives through times of crisis and life events and/or refer individuals and families to qualified counselors when deemed necessary.
  • Ensure the ongoing ministry to congregants who are facing major surgery, are homebound or in care facilities.
  • Coordinate, schedule or delegate special services and outreach events.
  • Ensure the ongoing development and implementation of outreach and follow-up ministries.
  • Ensure the development and discipleship of current and future leaders and volunteers within the church.
  • Evaluate needs, cast vision, and work with the Finance Committee to ensure implementation of capital campaigns and capital improvement projects as required and necessary.  Ensure that the trustees and staff are managing and maintaining the use of all church buildings, assets, and grounds.
  • Ensure that all ministries and committees are aligned with the church’s core vision and ministry objectives.
  • Work with the church treasurer, Finance Committee, and Church Council to ensure the financial well-being of the church through the budgeting, planning, and reporting processes.
  • Work with community churches and community organizations that are consistent with the church’s mission and values to develop relationships that allow for cooperation and coordination to further enhance the mission of Trinity Park Church into Hancock County.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s degree with experience as a lead or associate pastor is required. A Seminary Degree or other theological training with a ministerial focus is a plus.
  • A calling to pastoral ministry and more specifically a calling to serve as Lead Pastor of Trinity Park Church.
  • Be grounded in a sound, working understanding of Wesleyan theology.
  • Maintain and exhibit a life filled with a personal and growing relationship with Christ.
  • Experience and proclivity towards leadership.
  • Proficiency in effective delegating.
  • Understanding of and willingness to minister within the statement of “What We Believe” and adherence to the Bylaws of Trinity Park Church.
  • Have an empathetic and compassionate attitude to others while affirming the role of a shepherd.  Having the ability to create effective relationships that are built on availability, commitment, and trust.
  • Maintain a proper personal life balance between your own spiritual health and development, family, and ministry responsibilities.  Live a life that embodies a personal and growing relationship with Christ, that is congruent with the biblical requirements for leaders such as found in 1 Tim. 3:1-3; 2 Tim. 2; Titus 1:5-9 and maintain spiritual integrity that others should and would desire to imitate.
  • Be open, available, and willing to be challenged and directed by God.
